Abstract: The past two decades have witnessed an enormous growth of interest in the concept of stylus phantasticus and in particular, its application to north German organ music of the Baroque. This thesis examines the concept of 'fantastic style' in the writings of Kircher and Mattheson and its application in the works of Buxtehude. It is concluded that Buxtehude was very concious of the place of the 'fantastic' in his praeludia and that he embraced the perspectives of both Kircher and Mattheson in his use of the style.
