Abstract: This dissertation examines the musical background in Portugal prior to the arrival of the German Haupt family of flute makers who were vital to the development of the flute and its music in Portugal in the second half of the 18th century. The music of three Portuguese composers of flute music, Antonio Rodil, Pedro A. Avonano and Fr. Manuel S. Elias is discussed, music which, though hardly important in historical terms, is nevertheless idiomatic and related to many such pieces composed throughout Europe at the time.
