Abstract: In the following composition portfolio I will begin with an essay in which I will describe the processes which led to the finished portfolio of work. In the essay I will begin with my musical background and discuss the composers who have exerted an influence on my work. I will explain the techniques I used, from the humble beginnings of the original thought or inspiration, to the finished composition. I will explain, in some detail, the use of melodic, rhythmic and harmonic techniques in my work, with relevant musical examples. The portfolio of compositions itself consists of four separate works. I have tried to gain as much experience as possible, of working with different genres. The result of this is; a quintet for flute, clairnet, violin, violoncello and piano, a solo keyboard piece, two songs for soprano with piano accompaniment and a work for small orchestra.
