THESIS CONTENT

Abstract: Throughout the course of research, the researcher wished to address potential ways of engaging young people with contemporary Irish music. In this research, the researcher reviewed the pertinent literature on listening and then devised a criteria to take into consideration when creating tasks for engaging children with this music. The researcher then selected three pieces of contemporary Irish music that were suitable for use in the primary classroom and using extracts from these pieces, created tasks to help children engage with the music. The tasks were administered to 5th and 6th Class pupils over a period of two weeks. Initial responses were gathered and noted from the children and compared with those responses that were gathered at the end of the two weeks. These results were analysed and collated and conclusions drawn from them.
