Abstract: The last four hundred years have seen the guitar fall in and out of fashion, from its position as a respected medium for art music to its role as an accompanying instrument. These periodic changes in the guitar’s fortune are also reflected in the uneven quality of the repertoire written for it.

Improvements in the construction of the instrument at the end of the nineteenth century, coupled with a growing interest from leading twentieth-century composers, has resulted in a substantial and important new repertoire. A significant increase in the number of new works is especially evident after 1950. The availability of performing editions and compact disc recordings of these works is a vital ingredient for their dissemination internationally.

Since 1969, Irish composers have created a considerable repertoire for guitar, but this repertoire has been sadly neglected due to lack of such editions and recordings.

This project presents performing editions of thirty-seven works for classical guitar by twenty-one Irish composers; a set of five Compact Disc recordings which will include nineteen works by fourteen Irish composers (approximately four hours of music); a discussion with analytical comments and editorial commentary on the editions, with details, where available, of the composer/performer collaboration; and a more in-depth discussion of seven selected works. The editions will be presented in the form of typeset manuscripts using the Sibelius music typesetting software. The Editions of the four works by John Buckley, which will be published during 2006-2007, have been typeset using Finale music typesetting software. The last movement of his Sonata No. 1 has been typeset using Sibelius music typesetting software.

This project presents a collection of performing editions and recorded music, with discussion, analytical comments and commentary on the edition, of contemporary Irish music for classical guitar with orchestra, guitar with another instrument or voice, and guitar solo. This will serve as a resource for those who wish to perform or research this neglected repertoire.
