Abstract: The main text of this thesis discusses the influx of certain continental musicians to the Radio Éireann Symphony Orchestra in 1948. Chapter one deals with the marked presence of continental musicians in Ireland during the 1800s and early 1900s and mentions a selection of foreign musicians who resided in Ireland during this time. Chapter two discusses the musical revival in the twentieth century, notably the establishment of the RÉSO. It presents the arguments that were heard at the Dáil debates of the time and how some governmental figures felt about foreign musicians in Ireland. Chapter three concentrates on a few influential continental violin teachers and in chapter four material is drawn from personal interviews with current professional string players in Ireland who were taught by Jaroslav Vanecek. Chapter five evaluates these findings. Appendix one is a selection of continental violin players who have resided in Ireland. Appendices two through seven are the texts of interviews and questionnaires conducted during the research of this thesis.
