Abstract: The music of Irish composers has been widely performed, broadcast, recorded, and published, both here in Ireland and around the world. However, this level of exposure has been far greater than the level of critical analysis of works by Irish composers. John Buckley’s contribution to this large body of contemporary Irish music has been, and continues to be, most notable. He is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most eclectic composers, and his compositions deserve analytical attention. Although Buckley has written for piano in small scale works such as Boireann, and in large scale works such as A Thin Halo of Blue, this dissertation is primarily concerned with the compositions for solo piano.
Chapter one outlines the course of Buckley’s life to date, while chapter two affords an insight into the background of the piano works. Chapter three illustrates the various pianistic aspects of Buckley’s compositional style.
The conclusion provides a brief evaluation of the piano works and this is followed by a short bibliography.
Two appendices provide a complete list of the composer’s compositional output and scores of the five piano solo works.
Currently, the complete works for solo piano are in the process of being recorded by the Dublin pianist, Anthony Byrne, for release on the Naxos/Marco Polo label.
