Abstract: The primary aim of this dissertation is to produce a critical edition of P.C. Hammerl’s Wind Partita no.1 of no earlier than 1802 complete with commentary. A biographical account of Hammerl’s life as a court musician and his ability to compose and arrange music are also included. An in-depth analysis of the Wind Partita no.1 is given, both with respect to Hammerl’s original movements and to those that he arranged from the works of other composers. The latter form four of the eight movements of this Partita and include arrangements of the Andante from Haydn’s Symphony no.94 (‘Surprise’) and an aria from Winter’s opera Das unterbrochene Opferfest. Hammerl’s orchestration techniques are masterly, but in the four original movements the compositional style is more reflective of the late-18th century than of the early 19th century.
