| Abstract: |
This research provides a complete catalogue of the music (including unpublished works) of Poldowski (1879-1932), the pseudonym of the Anglo-Polish composer Lady Irene Dean Paul, youngest daughter of the celebrated violinist Henryk Wieniawski, and considers their contribution to the genre of fin-de-siecle composition. The stylistic development of the works is examined to ascertain the influence of the composer's contemporaries in France such as Faure, Debussy and Ravel. Her role as a female composer is considered with particular emphasis on her cultivation of a feminine (rather than feminist) aesthetic. |
