Abstract: This thesis examines the facility of binaural synthesis in audio software, the utilization of which results in a series of compositions which enhance the listeners perception of spatial motion.
The thesis takes Trevor Wishart’s notion of the “sound landscape” and highlights which computer modeling affords in terms of manipulating spatial motion in sound. Binaural technology is analysed, along with the proliferation of headphones as the optimum format for listening to music in the modern age.
A number of cognisant areas are also investigated: The preference for binaural over other 3D audio tools, and over stereo generally. The conceptual aspects of motion and immersion in contemporary, electronic and electroacoustic music. Spatial motions, and in forms in which they may be rendered. Binaural plug-ins and software tools, an analysis of which determines their strengths and flaws. The development of binaural tools for audio synthesis applications.
The project as a whole emphasizes the creative potential of audio editing technology, illustrating concepts of spatial arrangement and dimensionality which assist in creating sounds more immersive than may be experienced with traditional stereo. Four compositions will be completed, reflecting different methods of creating spatial motion as applied to a wide body of music. These include electroacoustic music, modern rock & electronic music production and programming audio compositions with the sound synthesis application Pure Data. Through analysing a wide range of binaural tools and applying them to a broad range of musical styles, a complete aesthetic of binaural synthesis will be formulated
